It is a timely reckoning—a moment to confront the fact that behind every container offloaded at the Port of Mombasa, every litre of fuel discharged at our shores, and every essential commodity that reaches our supermarket shelves, stands a seafarer whose sacrifice remains largely invisible.

This year’s global theme, “Carrying World Trade. Carrying the Risks,” captures a profound and uncomfortable truth. While more than 80 percent of global trade moves by sea, the men and women who power this engine endure staggering physical, psychological, and professional hazards. They brave unpredictable weather, navigate piracy-prone waters, endure agonising months away from their families, and increasingly grapple with complex geopolitical and security threats that imperil not only their livelihoods but their very lives.

Against this backdrop, the participation of the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) Director General, CPA Omae Nyarandi, alongside key maritime stakeholders in the Seafarers Awareness Walk, signals a growing national recognition of seafarers’ indispensable role in both our domestic and global economy. The presence of Mombasa County Executive Committee Member for the Blue Economy, Ibrahim Khamis, alongside representatives from the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), the Secretary General ,Atie Ramadhan,Seafarers Union of Kenya,Elijah Mbaru the CEO ,Kenya Ship Agents Association,Mwinyi Jahazi, the Chairman, Kenya Seafarers Wages Council, maritime institutions, Maritime Cadets, and the seafarers themselves, reflected a unified commitment to advancing the welfare of those who keep our maritime trade flowing.

The awareness walk was symbolic, but its resonance was powerful. It represented an act of solidarity with a workforce that remains the invisible engine of international commerce. More critically, it reinforced the principle that celebration must go hand-in-hand with concrete action to address the persistent challenges seafarers face.

Kenya stands at a strategic crossroads along one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors. The Port of Mombasa serves not only our nation but also several landlocked countries across East and Central Africa. As Kenya aggressively pursues its Blue Economy ambitions, it must recognise that its greatest maritime asset is not merely its ports or coastline—it is its people.

Investment in port infrastructure, therefore, must be matched by equivalent investment in human capital. Our seafarers require internationally competitive training, expanded sea-time opportunities, robust labour protections, and greater access to employment aboard international vessels. While Kenya’s maritime institutions have made notable strides in improving training standards, the transition from classroom to shipboard experience remains a formidable bottleneck. Without sufficient practical sea service, countless qualified graduates struggle to obtain the certifications required for international careers—a gap that continues to limit Kenya’s ability to capitalise on surging global demand for skilled maritime professionals.

Equally urgent is the matter of seafarer welfare. The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the acute vulnerability of maritime workers worldwide, stranding countless seafarers at sea long after their contracts had expired. Though the crisis has eased, many underlying concerns persist: chronic fatigue, debilitating mental health challenges, abandonment by unscrupulous shipowners, criminalisation following maritime incidents, and inadequate access to healthcare. These are not merely labour disputes—they are fundamental human rights issues that demand sustained international cooperation and robust national policy responses.

The Kenya Maritime Authority has increasingly positioned itself as a champion of maritime safety, regulatory compliance, and seafarer development. Its continued engagement with industry stakeholders, educational institutions, and labour organisations demonstrates a welcome appreciation that maritime governance extends beyond ships and ports to encompass the people who operate them. The involvement of COTU representatives during the commemoration further underscored the critical importance of social dialogue in protecting seafarers’ rights. Strong partnerships between regulators, employers, trade unions, and training institutions are indispensable if Kenya is to build a resilient, globally competitive maritime workforce.

The Blue Economy remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economic transformation agenda. However, its success cannot be measured by cargo throughput, port expansion, or shipping investments alone. Sustainable maritime growth hinges equally on ensuring decent work, occupational safety, and social protection for those who toil at sea. Every voyage undertaken by a seafarer carries not only cargo but significant personal risk. Every successful delivery represents countless hours of professional dedication under unforgiving conditions. Their contribution demands more than an annual tribute—it warrants continuous policy attention and tangible, enduring institutional support.

The Day of the Seafarer thus serves as both a celebration and a call to action. It reminds governments, shipowners, regulators, and society at large that maritime prosperity must never be built at the expense of those who make it possible. As Kenya strengthens its standing as a leading African maritime nation, it must ensure that its seafarers are equipped, protected, and respected. Their welfare is inseparable from the nation’s maritime competitiveness.

After all, if seafarers are carrying world trade, then governments, industry, and society must collectively carry the responsibility of safeguarding their future.

Andrew Mwangura is a Mombasa based Public Intellectual.

Email: mwangura@maritimebizreview.com

The commemoration of the Day of the Seafarer 2026 is far more than an annual maritime ceremony.
