For decades, the Likoni Ferry has been the umbilical cord connecting Mombasa Island to the South Coast, but it has also been a bottleneck of inefficiency, a drain on productivity, and, at times, a scene of tragedy. The 1.4-kilometer, four-lane bridge promises to finally end this era, unlocking the agricultural and tourism potential of a region long isolated by the vagaries of the sea.<\/p>\n
Yet this project’s significance extends far beyond Mombasa’s shores. The bridge will serve as a vital arterial link connecting the Northern Corridor\u2014East Africa’s busiest trade route stretching through Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and into the DRC\u2014with the Central Corridor, which funnels goods through Tanzania to landlocked neighbors. Even more ambitiously, it positions Mombasa to interface with the emerging Lobito Corridor, the trans-African railway and road network linking the Atlantic coast of Angola to the Indian Ocean via Zambia and the DRC. In essence, the Mombasa Gate Bridge transforms Kenya’s premier port from a regional gateway into a continental pivot\u2014a hinge between East, Central, and Southern Africa’s trade arteries.<\/p>\n
As we celebrate this monumental step, however, we must look beyond the ribbon-cutting optimism. History offers us clear signposts from both the Global North and the Global South\u2014lessons in what to emulate and what to avoid.<\/p>\n
From the North, we see models of engineering excellence and cautionary tales of cost overruns. France’s Millau Viaduct stands as a testament to what premium engineering can achieve: built on time and within budget, it has required minimal maintenance for decades\u2014a standard Kenya should demand from Japan’s renowned expertise. Conversely, Boston’s “Big Dig” ballooned from $2.8 billion to over $22 billion, plagued by delays and mismanagement. Even with ODA backing, Kenya must enforce rigorous independent oversight to prevent fiscal leakage. And the \u00d8resund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden transformed a peripheral region into a bi-national economic hub\u2014proving that Mombasa’s bridge must be paired with industrial zones and logistics parks, not just commuter lanes, to maximize return on investment.<\/p>\n
From the South, the lessons are even more urgent, given our shared development realities. Mozambique’s Maputo\u2013Katembe Bridge\u2014Africa’s longest suspension bridge\u2014boosted tourism and gas exports, but left hundreds of ferry workers jobless without transition plans. Kenya must pre-emptively reskill Likoni’s workforce before the first pile is driven. Bangladesh’s Padma Bridge, self-funded at $3.6 billion after the World Bank withdrew over corruption fears, now cuts travel time from eight hours to ten minutes\u2014but its rocky financing journey underscores the value of clean ODA, provided Kenya publishes full tender documents to maintain public trust. And in Nepal, the Japanese-funded Narayanghat\u2013Mugling road was plagued by landslides due to inadequate geological surveys, reminding us that Mombasa’s marine soil conditions demand rigorous, transparent seismic and tidal studies before construction begins.<\/p>\n
The critical difference between these examples is this: in the North, bridges often connect already wealthy regions; in the South, they connect underserved communities to economic hubs. Mombasa’s bridge falls firmly into the latter category\u2014but with a continental twist. By bridging the Northern, Central, and Lobito corridors, this single structure becomes a lynchpin in Africa’s ambition for seamless intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Its success will not be measured in concrete and steel alone, but in whether South Coast farmers see cheaper freight, beach hoteliers welcome more guests, Congolese minerals flow more efficiently to port, and Angolan goods find their way to Asian markets\u2014all within five years of opening.<\/p>\n
Japan brings the cheque and the technology. Kenya must bring the accountability, the reskilling plan, and the land-use policy. The Mombasa Gate Bridge is a testament to what visionary planning and international cooperation can achieve\u2014but only if we build it with our eyes wide open, and with a pan-African vision that matches its continental scale. We await its progress with guarded optimism, and with the firm expectation that this bridge will carry not just cars, but the prosperity of an entire region\u2014and beyond.<\/p>\n
