They carry the food on our tables, the fuel that powers our industries, the medicines that heal our sick, and the manufactured goods that sustain modern life. Yet these indispensable workers remain largely invisible—until a crisis erupts at sea.

As Christians around the world observe Sea Sunday on 11 July 2026, we are summoned to look beyond the horizon and recognise seafarers not as distant silhouettes on the ocean, but as neighbors deserving justice, dignity, and compassion.

This year’s theme, “Harbors of Hope: The Church Alongside Seafarers,” speaks to a profound calling. Yet it also exposes a painful contradiction. While the global economy depends on uninterrupted maritime trade, the people who make that trade possible increasingly endure conditions marked by isolation, insecurity, conflict, and neglect.

Today’s seafarers face far more than the traditional perils of storms, piracy, and shipwreck. Armed conflicts in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz have transformed commercial shipping lanes into dangerous frontlines, forcing crews to navigate war zones simply to keep global supply chains functioning. Their courage sustains the world economy, yet their sacrifices pass largely unnoticed—and too often, unappreciated.

Cardinal Michael Czerny wisely observed that “a ship must never become a place of silent isolation or indifference.” Sadly, for countless seafarers, that is precisely what their vessels have become.

Among the gravest injustices confronting crews today is the steady erosion of shore leave. Once regarded as a basic human right and an essential safeguard for physical and mental wellbeing, shore leave has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, opportunities for seafarers to step ashore have declined dramatically. What was once a routine respite has now become an alarmingly rare privilege.

This is far more than an inconvenience.

Months spent without setting foot on land leave many seafarers feeling imprisoned aboard their vessels. Deprived of meaningful rest, contact with loved ones, recreation, and the simple freedom to walk ashore, they experience chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, and profound emotional exhaustion. Mental health challenges within the maritime profession have reached deeply troubling levels—threatening not only individual wellbeing but also the safety of operations at sea.

Equally disturbing are the persistent cases of wage theft, abandonment, and contractual abuse. Across the globe, thousands of seafarers remain stranded aboard vessels after shipowners become insolvent or simply abandon their legal responsibilities. Some go unpaid for months while trapped in legal disputes beyond their control. Such treatment is unconscionable in an industry that underpins global prosperity.

Sea Sunday, therefore, represents far more than an annual religious observance. It is a moral summons to action.

For generations, organisations such as Stella Maris and The Mission to Seafarers have stood faithfully alongside maritime workers. Their chaplains and volunteers visit ships in ports worldwide, offering practical assistance, pastoral care, legal guidance, internet access, warm clothing, transportation, and—perhaps most importantly—genuine human companionship. They embody the very essence of this year’s theme, serving as true “Harbours of Hope” for those who spend much of their lives far from home and family.

Yet compassion alone cannot remedy systemic injustice.

The international shipping industry, governments, port authorities, and regulators must recommit themselves to protecting the welfare of those who keep global commerce moving. Shore leave must once again be treated as a fundamental right, not an optional privilege. The full implementation and enforcement of the Maritime Labour Convention must become a non-negotiable priority—ensuring that seafarers receive fair wages, decent working conditions, timely repatriation, and effective legal protection against abandonment and exploitation.

Crew welfare should never be viewed merely as an operational cost. It is a cornerstone of maritime safety, economic resilience, and, above all, human dignity.

As we commemorate Sea Sunday this year, let our prayers be accompanied by meaningful action. Let churches continue to open their doors to seafarers. Let governments strengthen protections for maritime workers. Let shipping companies place human welfare at the heart of their operations. And let ordinary citizens remember the men and women whose unseen labor sustains our daily lives.

The oceans connect every nation on Earth. They also remind us of our shared humanity.

May we ensure that those who dedicate their lives to the sea never sail alone—and that the Church, and indeed all of society, remains a steadfast beacon of hope amid every storm.

Andrew Mwangura is a Mombasa-based Public Intellectual and Maritime Affairs Analyst.

The world moves on the backs of giants, yet we rarely see them.
