It is a powerful market signal—and one that Kenya should welcome with resolve.

Nanjing Port General Manager Zhang Chuanping’s observation that Lamu possesses the “deep-water facilities, strategic location and ongoing capacity expansion” necessary to become a leading regional maritime hub deserves careful attention. This is not ceremonial praise. It is the considered professional judgment of experienced port executives who understand the dynamics of global shipping, logistics, and port competitiveness.

Their endorsement validates what Kenyan maritime planners envisioned years ago, when the first foundations of Lamu Port were laid.

The port’s recent performance reinforces that optimism. Cargo throughput has surged to 1.7 million metric tonnes during the period under review, more than doubling the 799,161 metric tonnes recorded in the same period last year. Vessel calls have increased from 162 to 169. While these figures remain modest compared to the Port of Mombasa, they chart the steady upward trajectory of a young port finding its place within regional and international trade.

Even more encouraging is the nature of that growth. Much of Lamu’s business now comes from transshipment—a fiercely competitive segment of global shipping in which cargo is transferred between vessels before reaching its final destination. This reflects the port’s natural advantages: deep-water berths, proximity to major international shipping lanes, and the ability to accommodate larger vessels with superior operational efficiency. This is precisely the strategic role Lamu was designed to perform.

A Complement, Not a Competitor

The tendency to frame Lamu and Mombasa as rivals misunderstands Kenya’s long-term maritime strategy. Lamu was never intended to replace Mombasa. Rather, it was conceived as a complementary gateway that strengthens Kenya’s overall port network by serving different markets and operational needs while easing pressure on the country’s busiest harbour.

Mombasa will remain East Africa’s principal commercial port for years to come. Its established infrastructure, extensive hinterland connections, and dominant cargo volumes ensure its pre-eminent position. Lamu, however, offers something distinctly different. Its naturally deep harbour enables it to receive some of the world’s largest vessels with minimal tidal restrictions, while its location places it closer to the international sea lanes linking Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Together, the two ports provide Kenya with a strategic maritime advantage that few regional competitors can match.

The recent discussions between the Nanjing Port delegation and Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, followed by the inspection visit to Lamu, point toward a promising partnership in automation, digitalisation, and operational excellence. In today’s shipping industry, efficiency is no longer optional. Ports that embrace technology, automation, and intelligent logistics will attract investment and shipping lines; those that fail to modernise risk being bypassed entirely.

Unlocking the Promise of LAPSSET

Lamu’s success cannot be separated from the wider ambitions of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor. The port is the maritime anchor of one of Africa’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, designed to connect Kenya with Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the wider hinterland through integrated road, rail, pipeline, and logistics networks.

Significant progress has been made, but critical challenges remain. Road and rail connectivity require further expansion. The envisioned crude oil pipeline from South Sudan has yet to materialise. Logistics parks and industrial zones must develop alongside maritime infrastructure if LAPSSET is to realise its full economic potential. These are no longer optional investments—they are strategic necessities.

China’s growing interest in Lamu is particularly significant because Chinese ports have become global leaders in digitalisation, automation, and integrated logistics management. Nanjing Port’s technical expertise could accelerate Kenya’s efforts to modernise port operations, reduce turnaround times, and improve cargo efficiency.

Strengthening Kenya’s Regional Position

Lamu’s emergence should also be viewed within the broader contest for regional maritime leadership. Kenya’s position as East Africa’s leading maritime gateway cannot be taken for granted. It must be continually reinforced through investment, innovation, operational efficiency, and strategic partnerships. Competition is intensifying—from Tanzania’s Port of Dar es Salaam, Djibouti’s expanding port complex, and evolving logistics corridors serving the Horn of Africa.

Against this backdrop, Lamu represents far more than another Kenyan port. It is a strategic national asset capable of strengthening Kenya’s influence across regional trade and global supply chains. The increasing interest shown by international shipping lines in using efficient logistics hubs along the East African coast demonstrates growing confidence in Kenya’s maritime vision.

As Port Manager Capt. Abdulaziz Mzee has rightly noted, improved operational efficiency continues to drive the port’s growth. In modern shipping, efficiency determines competitiveness. The ports that move cargo quickly, predictably, and cost-effectively become indispensable nodes in global commerce.

Turning Vision into Reality

The momentum behind Lamu must now be sustained. Capacity expansion should continue without delay. Supporting infrastructure—including highways, rail links, logistics parks, and industrial developments—must advance alongside port growth. International partnerships that transfer technology, skills, and operational expertise should be actively cultivated.

Equally important is maintaining a coherent national port strategy. Lamu and Mombasa are not rivals competing for the same future; they are complementary pillars of Kenya’s maritime economy whose success is mutually reinforcing. A coordinated approach by the Kenya Ports Authority will ensure each port maximises its comparative advantages while strengthening Kenya’s overall competitiveness.

The confidence expressed by the Nanjing Port delegation is well placed. But confidence alone does not transform a port into a global logistics hub. That requires disciplined execution, sustained investment, efficient operations, and visionary leadership.

Kenya has already laid the foundation. Now it must build upon it with determination.

The tide is clearly turning in Lamu’s favour. If the current momentum is maintained, the port will not merely complement Mombasa—it will redefine Kenya’s position in regional and international maritime trade.

The question is no longer whether Lamu can become a leading maritime hub. The real question is how quickly Kenya can seize this historic opportunity.

China’s Nanjing Port delegation sees what Kenya has long believed: Lamu is a gateway to East Africa’s maritime future.
