The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has achieved a significant milestone with the acquisition of two internationally recognized certifications, underscoring its dedication to environmental stewardship and occupational safety across its facilities.<\/p>\n

The Authority has been awarded the ISO 14001:2015 certification for Environmental Management Systems and the ISO 45001:2018 certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. These accreditations confirm that KPA has adopted globally recognized standards designed to foster sustainable operations, protect the environment, and enhance the health, safety, and well-being of its employees, port users, and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n

A Hallmark of Public Sector Excellence<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking during the certificate presentation ceremony in Mombasa, Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Managing Director Esther Ngari lauded the achievement as a pivotal step in KPA\u2019s journey toward operational excellence and sustainable growth.<\/p>\n

Ngari noted that KPA has maintained its ISO 9001 certification for Quality Management Systems since 2010\u2014a testament to over a decade of dedication to quality management and customer-focused service delivery. She emphasized that the Authority has consistently embraced international best practices to provide efficient, timely, and reliable port and logistics services.<\/p>\n

“Today’s certification to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 represents a natural progression in KPA’s excellence journey,” said Ngari. “The Authority has evolved from focusing primarily on quality management to embracing an integrated system where quality, environmental stewardship, and occupational health and safety are treated as strategic priorities.”<\/p>\n

She described the recognition as the hallmark of a world-class port authority, noting that KPA has set a benchmark not only for Kenya but for the broader African continent.<\/p>\n

Strengthening Regional Trade Corridors<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ngari further observed that the Port of Mombasa serves as the principal gateway to East and Central Africa. She highlighted that continued improvements in KPA\u2019s management systems will bolster regional trade and logistics corridors serving Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, and other neighboring countries, reinforcing the port\u2019s critical role in the region’s supply chain.<\/p>\n

KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto said the certifications crown years of hard work, resilience, and institutional transformation. He expressed deep gratitude to KEBS for its technical support throughout the rigorous certification process and emphasized that the recognition reflects more than a decade of sustained reforms.<\/p>\n

Capt. Ruto noted that the adoption of ISO standards has fundamentally transformed the Authority’s operations. It has strengthened governance systems, improved operational discipline, and enhanced KPA\u2019s capacity to respond to the increasingly dynamic demands of the maritime and logistics sectors.<\/p>\n

“The reforms we are witnessing today were driven by the realities KPA faced in the early 2000s,” he explained. “Rising cargo volumes, ageing infrastructure, manual processes, and growing safety and environmental risks threatened the port’s ability to evolve into a resilient, efficient, and globally competitive maritime gateway.”<\/p>\n

The journey to this dual certification has been marked by significant infrastructural and operational upgrades, including the modernization of berths, the acquisition of state-of-the-art cargo handling equipment, and the digitization of key port processes.
