Products and services must meet required standards—consistently, every day.

Delivered on behalf of Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei by Deputy Head of Public Service Amos Gachetha, the message cut through the usual ceremonial language. Quality is not a peripheral compliance exercise. It is an economic and governance imperative at the heart of competitiveness, operational efficiency and sustainable development.

Kenya’s development agenda is ambitious. Expanding productive capacity, strengthening industries, creating jobs, growing exports and improving public service delivery are not abstract goals. They are the practical requirements of a country seeking to raise living standards, absorb a youthful labour force and claim a larger share of regional and global markets. Koskei’s intervention correctly identifies the missing link. Without a culture of quality embedded in both private enterprise and public institutions, capital expenditure and policy reforms risk under-delivering.

A factory that cannot consistently meet standards loses export contracts. A port that falters on reliability raises costs for every trader who uses it. A public service that treats citizens as afterthoughts erodes trust and multiplies inefficiency.

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) organised the awards under the theme “Quality: Powering Performance.” The choice is telling. Quality is not merely about avoiding defects or satisfying auditors. It is a performance driver. Organisations that internalise rigorous standards tend to reduce waste, improve process reliability, strengthen brand reputation and open doors to higher-value markets. In an era of the African Continental Free Trade Area, stricter rules of origin and rising consumer expectations, mediocrity is expensive. Regional competitors that treat quality as strategic rather than optional will capture the gains Kenya aspires to.

The Kenya Ports Authority’s participation as both sponsor and stakeholder illustrates the point in practical terms. As a critical maritime trade facilitator, KPA’s commitment to quality management systems across its operations is not corporate philanthropy. Port efficiency, cargo integrity, safety and predictable service delivery determine whether Kenya remains a preferred logistics hub or becomes a costly bottleneck. When Manager Corporate Communication Jones Buchere represented CEO Capt. William Ruto at the event, the message was institutional: quality is operational, not ornamental.

The same logic applies across manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, financial services and the digital economy. Continuous improvement is the difference between competing on price alone and competing on value.

Yet the gap between aspiration and practice remains wide. Many micro, small and medium enterprises still view standards as a cost rather than an investment. Enforcement can be uneven. Public procurement sometimes prioritises lowest price over lifecycle value and reliability. Informal sector operators, who employ the majority of Kenyans, often operate outside formal quality systems altogether.

These are not minor frictions. They dilute productivity, limit export readiness and frustrate citizens who encounter variable service quality in hospitals, licensing offices, transport and utilities. Koskei’s insistence that quality is a governance imperative is therefore well placed. Governments that fail to demand and model excellence in their own operations undermine the very standards they urge the private sector to adopt.

The awards themselves serve a useful signalling function. Recognising organisations that demonstrate outstanding commitment to standards, operational excellence and continuous improvement creates positive peer pressure. It also provides platforms for benchmarking and knowledge exchange. When business leaders, quality professionals and government officials share experiences under one roof, the conversation moves beyond slogans. The presence of National Standards Council Chairman Hon. Chris Wamalwa, KEBS Director General Esther Ngari and representatives of the State Department for Investment reinforced institutional ownership.

Still, awards are milestones, not destinations. The real test is whether the culture of excellence spreads beyond the winners’ circle into supply chains, county governments and everyday public service.

Three practical priorities follow from the evening’s message. First, quality systems must be made more accessible and affordable for smaller firms. Certification, testing and continuous improvement support cannot remain the preserve of large corporates if inclusive growth is the goal. Second, public institutions must lead by example. Service charters, performance contracting and citizen feedback mechanisms only matter when they produce measurable improvements in reliability and responsiveness. Third, quality must be integrated into industrial policy, export promotion and skills development. Training programmes that ignore standards and process discipline produce graduates who can talk about innovation but struggle to deliver consistent output.

Kenya’s economic transformation will not be powered by capital alone, nor by policy announcements. It will be powered by the daily discipline of meeting standards—whether in a factory in Athi River, a warehouse in Mombasa, a clinic in Kakamega or a digital platform serving millions.

Felix Koskei’s call, delivered through Amos Gachetha, is therefore less a ceremonial remark than a strategic reminder. Quality is the quiet infrastructure of competitiveness. Without it, the country’s ambitious development goals remain vulnerable to the most avoidable of failures: the inability to deliver, consistently, what has been promised.

The organisations recognised at the Kenya Quality Awards have shown what is possible. The larger task is to make that standard the norm rather than the exception.

Andrew Mwangura is a maritime and logistics analyst based in Mombasa.

On a Friday evening in Nairobi, amid the formalities of the third Kenya Quality Awards Gala Dinner, a simple but profound truth was restated: investment and innovation alone will not deliver Kenya’s economic ambitions.
