Kenya Maritime Authority Director General CPA Omae Nyarandi joined Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs Aden Abdi Millah and Kenya’s Ambassador to Norway, H.E. Angeline Kavindu Musili, MBS, at a panel on Trade and Logistics in East Africa. Their presence was more than ceremonial. It was a deliberate assertion that Kenya’s future competitiveness will be won not only in its ports and corridors but through strategic partnerships that fuse efficiency, innovation, and sustainability.

The discussions centred on the Northern Corridor—the multimodal artery linking the Port of Mombasa to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This corridor is no ordinary transport route. It serves a regional population exceeding 250 million and remains the primary gateway for the landlocked economies of the Great Lakes. Recent data underscore its vitality: cargo throughput at Mombasa reached 45.45 million metric tonnes in 2025, a 10.9 percent rise, with transit traffic climbing 18.6 percent. Uganda alone accounts for nearly 70 percent of that transit volume. Yet volumes alone do not guarantee primacy. Persistent non-tariff barriers, roadblocks, border delays, and infrastructure gaps continue to inflate logistics costs and tempt cargo diversion toward Tanzania’s Central Corridor.

Here lies the strategic heart of the Oslo engagement. Efficient maritime transport, modern port infrastructure, and seamless hinterland connectivity are not optional extras; they are the price of regional relevance. Nyarandi brings particular authority to this conversation. His previous role as Executive Secretary of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority gave him intimate knowledge of the corridor’s bottlenecks and potential. That experience, combined with his tenure at the Kenya Ports Authority, positions the KMA to move beyond regulation toward active facilitation of trade. The Authority’s mandate—promoting safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable maritime transport—aligns precisely with the demands of a corridor that must shed inefficiency if Kenya is to retain its role as East Africa’s maritime and logistics hub.

Partnership with Norway and the wider Nordic region offers a practical pathway. Norway’s maritime sector is among the world’s most advanced in green shipping, digital logistics, and ocean sustainability. Recent high-level engagements have already yielded tangible signals: commitments by Norwegian firms, including Wilhelmsen Ship Management, to employ 1,000 Kenyan seafarers by 2030, and exploratory talks on new shipping routes linking Mombasa and Lamu to Norwegian ports. These conversations sit comfortably within Kenya’s broader blue economy ambition. The National Blue Economy Strategy frames maritime transport and trade as a core pillar, recognising that over 90 percent of Kenya’s international trade moves by sea and that the sector’s contribution to GDP remains far below its potential.

Yet ambition without execution is rhetoric. The Oslo panel correctly emphasised innovation and strategic partnerships. Modern port infrastructure—whether through expansion at Mombasa, the gradual operationalisation of Lamu, or smarter multimodal links via the Standard Gauge Railway—must be matched by regulatory agility and digital systems that reduce dwell times and documentation friction. Green freight initiatives along the Northern Corridor, aimed at improving fuel efficiency and cutting emissions intensity, are not merely environmental gestures; they are competitive necessities as global supply chains demand lower-carbon options. Nordic expertise in decarbonisation and green corridors could accelerate this transition, provided Kenya creates predictable investment frameworks and skills pipelines.

There is also a geopolitical dimension. In an era of shifting trade patterns and supply-chain resilience concerns, East Africa’s ability to offer reliable, cost-effective access to the Indian Ocean matters to partners beyond the region. Norway’s interest is not philanthropic; it reflects commercial logic and a shared stake in stable ocean governance. For Kenya, cultivating such relationships diversifies its maritime diplomacy beyond traditional partners and strengthens its voice in international forums on shipping standards, safety, and sustainability.

Challenges remain real. Funding gaps for maritime training and infrastructure persist. Border posts still experience peak delays that undermine corridor competitiveness. Competition from alternative routes is intensifying. These realities demand that diplomatic outreach be matched by domestic delivery: fewer roadblocks, faster clearance, consistent policy, and genuine private-sector partnership.

The engagement in Oslo, therefore, should be read as more than a panel discussion. It is an affirmation that Kenya understands the Northern Corridor’s strategic weight and is prepared to leverage international collaboration to keep it competitive. Under Nyarandi’s leadership, and with the political backing of the State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, the KMA has an opportunity to translate conversation into concrete outcomes—safer seas, smoother logistics, deeper Nordic ties, and a blue economy that delivers measurable growth.

East Africa’s trade future will not be determined solely by geography. It will be shaped by the quality of infrastructure, the efficiency of institutions, and the strength of partnerships. In that equation, Kenya’s maritime leadership has a decisive role to play. The conversations in Oslo mark a constructive step. The real test will be whether the momentum returns home and is converted into lower costs, faster transit, and broader opportunity for the region the Northern Corridor serves.

In the grand halls of Oslo’s Grand Hotel, far from the bustling quays of Mombasa, a quiet but consequential conversation unfolded.
