This is more capacity than the next two carriers combined in some snapshots, and a gap over second-place A.P. Moller-Maersk (roughly 4.73–4.75 million TEU) larger than the entire operated fleet of fifth-ranked Hapag-Lloyd. CMA CGM sits close behind Maersk at about 4.47 million TEU, followed by COSCO Shipping Group (~3.65–3.66 million), Hapag-Lloyd (~2.40–2.41 million), Ocean Network Express (~2.18–2.19 million), Evergreen (~2.04 million), HMM (~1.03 million), Yang Ming (~0.77 million), and Wan Hai or ZIM rounding out the top ten depending on the precise daily cut-off.

The top five carriers control roughly 65–66 percent of global capacity; the top ten command about 85 percent. The world container fleet itself stands near 34.9 million TEU across some 7,600–7,700 ships. This is not incremental consolidation. It is structural power.

How MSC Built an Unassailable Lead

MSC’s ascent has been relentless. It became the first carrier to breach 7 million TEU and the first to sustain more than 21 percent market share—surpassing the previous high-water mark set by Maersk at 19.3 percent in 2018. This growth was fueled by a potent combination of aggressive newbuilding, opportunistic chartering, and selective second-hand purchases. Post-pandemic profits funded a massive fleet expansion that competitors, even those with strong orderbooks, have struggled to match in absolute terms. MSC’s current orderbook of roughly 2.9 million TEU remains the industry’s largest, ensuring its lead will widen further before any theoretical peak.

Maersk, by contrast, has pursued a more disciplined, integrated logistics strategy, signaling a preference for a leaner core fleet over pure capacity accumulation. CMA CGM has been the primary growth story among challengers, closing the gap on Maersk through a heavy orderbook and strong recent deliveries; the two are separated by only a few hundred thousand TEU in some recent tallies, with CMA CGM already competitive or ahead on owned tonnage. COSCO’s solid position reflects China’s strategic weight in global manufacturing and trade. The rest of the top ten—European, Japanese/Singaporean, Taiwanese, and Korean operators—operate at a scale that still matters regionally or within alliances but cannot independently dictate terms on the major East-West trades.

Concentration Has Consequences

Scale delivers clear advantages: denser networks, better asset utilization, lower unit costs on mega-ships, stronger bargaining power with ports and terminals, and the financial firepower to invest in dual-fuel and eventually zero-carbon vessels. Larger operators can also absorb shocks—Red Sea diversions, Panama Canal constraints, or demand swings—more easily than smaller ones. For shippers, however, the picture is mixed. Fewer meaningful alternatives reduce negotiating leverage. Contract rates and spot markets become increasingly dependent on the capacity deployment decisions of a handful of players and their alliance partners (Gemini, Ocean Alliance, Premier). While service reliability can improve with network density, the risk of coordinated capacity discipline—or its opposite, a race to fill ships in an oversupplied market—rises.

The orderbook underscores the dual nature of this moment. The top 100 carriers have roughly 13 million TEU on order, equivalent to about 38 percent of their existing operated fleet. That pipeline supports fleet renewal and greener propulsion, but it also raises the familiar specter of overcapacity once deliveries accelerate. History shows that container shipping is cyclical: boom-period ordering frequently produces soft markets a few years later. MSC’s sheer size gives it greater ability to idle or cascade vessels; smaller players have less cushion.

Geopolitically, the ranking is telling. European-controlled groups (MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd) still dominate the top tier, yet Chinese capacity via COSCO is substantial and strategically aligned with Beijing’s trade interests. Asian independents and alliance members fill important niches, particularly intra-Asia and specialized trades. The industry’s extreme concentration amplifies the systemic importance of these few companies to global supply-chain resilience. Disruptions at any one of them—or regulatory actions targeting them—would ripple far beyond freight rates.

Risks, Resilience, and the Road Ahead

Antitrust authorities in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere have long monitored liner alliances and capacity discipline. A market in which one independent operator alone holds more than one-fifth of capacity, and five groups control two-thirds, invites continued scrutiny even if pure horizontal mergers remain limited. At the same time, the capital intensity of the business and the network effects of global schedules make new entry almost impossible at scale. Mid-sized and regional carriers survive by specialization, feeder services, or niche trades, but they operate in the shadow of the giants.

Looking forward, several dynamics will shape the next chapter. CMA CGM’s growth trajectory could eventually challenge Maersk for second place. MSC shows no sign of slowing its absolute expansion. Vessel size continues its upward creep; industry analysis already contemplates commercially viable 27,000+ TEU designs in the 2030s if fuel efficiency and port infrastructure keep pace. Decarbonization pressures will favor operators with the balance sheets to order dual-fuel and alternative-fuel tonnage early. And geopolitical friction—trade policy, sanctions, chokepoint security—will test the flexibility of concentrated networks.

The Alphaliner snapshot of October 2026 is therefore less a ranking than a power map. MSC’s dominance is real, hard-won, and self-reinforcing. It delivers efficiency and investment capacity that benefit the system in some respects, yet it concentrates decision-making and risk in fewer hands than at any previous point in the modern container era. Shippers, ports, regulators, and competing lines must plan accordingly. In an industry that moves the goods of globalization, the question is no longer whether concentration has occurred. It is how the rest of the ecosystem adapts to the colossus that now towers over the trade lanes.

A simple ranking of container shipping capacity, published in early October 2026 and drawn from Alphaliner’s Top 100, reveals something more profound than league-table trivia: the architecture of global trade is now defined by an unprecedented concentration of power.
