Egypt follows at $443 billion; Nigeria at $387 billion. On the surface, the ranking looks familiar. Look closer, and that order is already dissolving.

The October 2026 IMF World Economic Outlook numbers reveal something more consequential than who occupies first place: the middle of Africa’s economic hierarchy is rearranging itself at speed. Kenya has pulled clearly ahead as East Africa’s largest economy, at $151 billion. Ghana has climbed to eighth. Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo have both crossed $120 billion. Côte d’Ivoire has overtaken Tanzania. Uganda is closing in on $75 billion. These are not statistical ripples. They signal a continent shifting from a few dominant poles to multiple, competing centres of gravity.

Scale Without Momentum Is a Fragile Advantage

South Africa’s position remains impressive in absolute terms. It still has the continent’s deepest financial markets, largest industrial base and most sophisticated corporate sector. Yet the IMF projects growth of only about 1 percent in 2026—one of the weakest rates among Africa’s top 20 economies. Egypt, by contrast, is expected to expand by roughly 5.1 percent. The gap between first and second is already narrower than it appears, and it could narrow further if Egypt sustains stronger growth and stabilises its currency.

Nigeria’s fall from unchallenged giant is even more instructive. It remains Africa’s most populous market and a major oil producer, but currency depreciation has sharply reduced the dollar value of its output. Real growth of around 4.2 percent is respectable, though no longer exceptional. The lesson is blunt: population size and resource endowment no longer automatically translate into nominal economic primacy when exchange rates move against you.

North Africa continues to punch above its weight. Algeria ($332 billion) and Morocco ($196 billion) occupy fourth and fifth places. Morocco’s story is especially revealing. Unlike pure hydrocarbon economies, it has steadily built capacity in automotive manufacturing, aerospace components, tourism, phosphates, logistics and renewables. Diversification is beginning to matter as much as resource rents.

The Rise of New Centres

Kenya’s consolidation at seventh place is one of the most significant structural shifts. At $151 billion, it now stands more than $55 billion ahead of Tanzania and nearly $79 billion above Uganda. Nairobi has become a genuine regional headquarters for banks, technology firms, professional services and multinationals. Its financial system is deeper than most East African peers. Growth of about 4.5 percent is solid rather than spectacular, but the accumulated stock of economic activity gives Kenya a durable advantage.

Ghana’s climb to eighth ($129 billion) is equally striking. With a fraction of Ethiopia’s or Tanzania’s population, it has used recovery, currency stabilisation, commodity exports and services to leapfrog larger peers. Ethiopia, ninth at $127 billion, is projected to grow at 9.2 percent—the fastest rate among major African economies. If sustained, that pace could transform the rankings within a decade. The Democratic Republic of Congo, tenth at $122 billion, is converting copper and cobalt wealth into scale at a moment when global demand for energy-transition minerals is intensifying.

Côte d’Ivoire’s quiet advance to eleventh ($110 billion), ahead of Tanzania, underscores another truth: a country does not need a population approaching 70 million to build a $100 billion-plus economy. Sustained growth near 6 percent, investment, agro-processing and export expansion have allowed it to pull ahead of peers that once looked comparable.

Tanzania’s twelfth place at $96 billion is therefore a relative, not absolute, setback. Six percent growth remains strong by global standards, but it is no longer distinctive in a region where Ethiopia is compounding far faster, Uganda is growing at 6.2 percent, and Côte d’Ivoire matches or exceeds that pace while expanding exports more aggressively. The gap with the countries immediately above it has widened. Stability and respectable growth are necessary; they are no longer sufficient.

What Nominal Rankings Conceal

These numbers measure scale in dollars. They do not measure living standards, productivity or institutional quality. Nigeria remains larger than Morocco, yet Moroccan income per capita is substantially higher. DRC’s GDP now exceeds Côte d’Ivoire’s, but poverty and infrastructure deficits remain profound. South Africa’s size coexists with chronic unemployment, power shortages and logistics bottlenecks. Currency movements can lift or sink rankings even when real production is relatively stable—as Nigeria and Ethiopia illustrate from opposite directions.

Zimbabwe’s fourteenth place, Guinea’s mining-driven rise and Zambia’s copper-linked position further caution against treating nominal GDP as destiny. Mining can rapidly reweight economies when global demand for critical minerals surges. It can also leave countries exposed when prices turn.

A More Competitive Contour

The deeper implication is geographic and strategic. Africa is developing several economic centres at once: North Africa through Egypt, Algeria and Morocco; Southern Africa through South Africa and Angola; West Africa through Nigeria, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire; and East and Central Africa through Kenya, Ethiopia, DRC, Tanzania and Uganda. Opportunity is becoming less concentrated. Consumer markets, infrastructure spending, financial services, mining, logistics and digital activity are expanding across multiple regions simultaneously.

For investors, this dispersion is positive. For policymakers, it is a warning. Countries that once appeared securely established in the top tier can no longer assume permanence. Currency stability, export capacity, productivity growth, the ability to attract private capital, and the conversion of demographic or mineral advantages into diversified value chains will increasingly decide who rises and who slips.

The next decade is likely to rearrange this table more dramatically than the last. South Africa’s lead is real but not impregnable. Kenya’s regional dominance is consolidating. Ethiopia’s growth potential is transformative if foreign-exchange and debt constraints can be managed. DRC’s mineral wealth is reaching commercial scale. Tanzania and others face a sharper choice: accelerate productivity and export growth, or watch the gap with faster-moving peers widen further.

Africa’s economic map is no longer defined by one or two giants. It is becoming a contest among several centres of gravity. That contest is already underway.

South Africa still sits atop Africa’s economic table, with a nominal GDP of roughly $489 billion.
