When Kenya talks about the Blue Economy, the conversation often drifts to ships, ports, and seafarers. But the real backbone of maritime trade is less glamorous: freight forwarding, clearing and forwarding, container freight station operations, ship agency, warehousing, and supply chain management. Without these landside professionals, cargo does not move, ports do not clear, and trade does not happen.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Kenya Maritime Authority\u2019s Maritime Transport & Logistics Industry Placement Programme, closing on 23 October 2026, is a timely intervention. It invites trainees and recent graduates from KMA-approved institutions to apply for internships and industrial attachment with Maritime Transport Operators. Placement areas include CFS operations, ship agency operations, maritime transport logistics, freight forwarding, shipping and logistics, and warehousing, distribution and supply chain. Crucially, applications go through training institutions, not directly to KMA, and no fee is charged.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This is the right model. It forces training institutions to take responsibility for their graduates. It gives MTOs a structured way to recruit. It signals that KMA sees the logistics pipeline as part of the Blue Economy, not an afterthought.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Yet the programme\u2019s own caveat\u2014\u201csubject to available opportunities, programme requirements and the capacity of each Maritime Transport Operator\u201d\u2014reveals the challenge. Kenya has many logistics graduates. It has far fewer MTOs willing or able to host them. The result is a bottleneck that no amount of government circulars can wish away.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Clearing and forwarding is not clerical work. A single misdeclared HS code, a delayed customs entry, or a poorly managed CFS can cost importers millions and clog port operations. Ship agency operations determine how quickly vessels berth and discharge. Warehousing and distribution decisions affect the cost of goods on supermarket shelves. These are skilled, strategic roles. They deserve structured training, mentorship, and professional recognition.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So what needs to happen?<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
First, MTOs must step up. Internships should be paid where possible, structured, and treated as a talent pipeline. The private sector cannot complain about skills shortages while refusing to provide practical exposure.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Second, government must incentivise. Tax credits for firms that host interns, or linking licensing renewals to training participation, could move the needle.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Third, training institutions must modernise. Curricula should include digital customs systems, green logistics, data analytics, and AfCFTA rules of origin.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Fourth, KMA and industry associations such as KIFWA should create a national placement platform, monitor quality, and publish data on absorption rates.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Fifth, funding must follow. The Blue Economy cannot be built on unpaid internships and goodwill alone.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The 23 October 2026 deadline is more than an administrative date. It is a test of whether Kenya can convert its maritime ambition into real jobs. The country\u2019s future as a trade and logistics hub will not be decided only by the depth of its harbours or the length of its coastline. It will be decided by the competence of its freight forwarders, clearing agents, CFS operators, ship agents, and supply chain managers.<\/div>\n

KMA\u2019s placement programme is a promising start. Now it must be scaled, funded, and owned by industry. Otherwise, Kenya will keep training logistics graduates for a Blue Economy that never quite docks.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
