Mombasa will take the lion’s share with 41 vessels—including six oil tankers, 26 container ships, seven conventional cargo vessels, and two car carriers. Lamu is projected to handle 10, almost entirely container traffic (nine ships) plus one general cargo vessel.

These are not abstract numbers. They map the flow of energy security, consumer goods, and industrial inputs, and they represent the quiet assertion of Kenya’s role as East and Central Africa’s primary maritime gateway.

The six oil tankers stand out for good reason. Kenya remains heavily dependent on imported refined petroleum products, and their arrival reinforces ongoing efforts to stabilise supply and cushion consumers. Recent government inspections of coastal storage facilities—including the repurposed Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited site and the expanded Kipevu Oil Terminal—have been accompanied by assurances of more than a month’s reserves and additional tankers en route. Night navigation for laden oil tankers, now operational, aims to cut turnaround times and raise daily capacity at the modern terminal, which can handle multiple vessels simultaneously. This progress comes as Kenya prepares for the long-delayed start of Turkana crude exports, targeted for December 2026, which will eventually reverse some tanker traffic and position Mombasa as both an import and export node.

Container ships dominate the schedule—35 across both ports—reflecting the backbone of modern trade. These vessels move the electronics, machinery, textiles, and intermediate goods that feed Kenya’s manufacturing and retail sectors, while loading agricultural exports such as tea, coffee, and horticultural produce. Mombasa’s 2025 performance already set records: 45.45 million metric tonnes of total cargo (up 10 percent from 2024) and 2.11 million TEUs. Transit cargo, critical for Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and beyond, grew even faster. The port’s emergence as a transshipment hub for lines such as Messina, with a significant share of cargo destined for Dar es Salaam, adds another layer of revenue and regional centrality.

Lamu’s contribution, though smaller in absolute numbers, carries strategic weight. Its deep-water berths (around 17.5 metres) and longer quays allow it to accommodate mega-vessels that strain older facilities. Recent calls by ships such as the 369-metre Baltimore Express and the Hamouna, which discharged a record 5,200 TEUs in a single call, demonstrate this advantage. Lamu is still finding its commercial feet more than five years after the first berth opened, yet cargo volumes have surged and major lines are testing regular services. As the maritime anchor of the LAPSSET corridor, it is designed to serve Ethiopia and South Sudan more efficiently than longer routes through Djibouti. Every container ship calling there is a small vote of confidence in that long-term vision.

Yet the schedule also exposes pressures. Ship agents have raised alarms about congestion at Mombasa, with more than 20,000 empty containers clogging terminals and depots, vessels waiting at outer anchorage, and productivity suffering. Peak-season patterns and residual effects from regional disruptions have compounded the problem. KPA’s response—new ship-to-shore cranes capable of handling wider vessels, the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System, berth 19B under construction, and additional equipment for Lamu—is necessary but must be matched by hinterland improvements: rail reliability, road capacity, faster customs processes, and better coordination with Container Freight Stations. Without these, higher vessel numbers risk translating into higher costs rather than higher competitiveness.

The broader picture is encouraging. Kenya’s ports are not merely passive recipients of global shipping schedules; they are active participants in reconfiguring East African logistics. Rising container volumes signal demand recovery and deeper integration into global value chains. Oil tanker traffic underwrites energy security at a time of geopolitical volatility. Lamu’s gradual maturation diversifies capacity and reduces single-port risk. Competition from Dar es Salaam and Djibouti remains real, but so does Kenya’s geographic advantage, improving infrastructure, and the momentum of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Policymakers and port managers should treat this fortnight’s schedule as both validation and warning. Validation that investment in capacity and technology is attracting calls. Warning that without relentless focus on efficiency, dwell times, and corridor connectivity, the gains can erode. Sustained growth in vessel traffic and cargo throughput will depend less on the next 14-day list and more on whether Mombasa and Lamu can convert arrivals into reliably faster, cheaper, and more predictable trade for the region they serve. The ships are coming. The question is whether the ports—and the systems behind them—are fully ready to turn volume into lasting competitive advantage.

The Kenya Ports Authority’s latest two-week vessel schedule offers a telling snapshot of the nation’s maritime pulse: 51 ships are expected at the ports of Mombasa and Lamu.
