The maritime industry moves over 80% of global trade, yet the people who make this possible remain one of the least visible workforces in the modern economy. For those considering a life at sea—or for cadets already standing at the foot of the gangway—understanding the full arc of a seafaring career, from first apprenticeship to eventual retirement ashore, is essential. This piece maps that journey across the three principal technical career tracks: Deck, Engine, and Electro-Technical Officer (ETO).

WHY A SEAFARING CAREER STILL MATTERS
Despite automation, remote monitoring, and persistent talk of autonomous shipping, the industry continues to face a structural officer shortage, particularly at senior ranks. BIMCO/ICS manpower reports have repeatedly flagged a widening gap between demand and supply of certified officers. For a young person willing to commit to rigorous training, irregular family time, and a genuinely global workplace, seafaring still offers rapid responsibility, tax-advantaged earnings in many flag states, and a credential—the STCW certificate of competency—that travels across borders and employers.
ENTRY POINTS: HOW PEOPLE GET IN
There are broadly three doors into a seafaring career.
The most common route is the maritime academy or cadetship path. Candidates enrol in a nautical or marine engineering degree or diploma programme at a recognised maritime academy—in India, for instance, TS Chanakya and MERI; in the Philippines, PMMA and various MARINA-accredited schools; in the UK, Warsash and South Shields; in the US, the state and federal maritime academies. These programmes combine classroom instruction in navigation, ship stability, marine engineering, electro-technology, and law with mandatory seagoing service, typically 12 to 18 months split across two sea phases, sponsored by a shipping company or manning agent.
A second path is the direct-entry rating route. Some seafarers begin not as officer cadets but as ratings—Ordinary Seaman on deck or Wiper in the engine room—often after a shorter certificate course. This route requires no prior academic pedigree beyond basic literacy and physical fitness, and it remains a legitimate path to officer rank through further study and sea time. This is the traditional “hawsepiper” route, well established in the US and increasingly recognised elsewhere.
A third door is the ex-navy or second-career entry. Former navy personnel and, less commonly, shore-based engineers or electricians converting to ETO roles enter via conversion or “bridging” courses that credit prior sea time and technical training toward STCW requirements.
Whichever door is used, every entrant must pass a medical fitness examination (ENG1 or flag-state equivalent), complete STCW Basic Safety Training in fire fighting, first aid, personal survival, and personal safety and social responsibility, and hold a valid passport, seaman’s book, and—depending on trade routes—a US C1/D visa.
Short Certificate Courses into Ratings and Specialist Roles
Alongside the academy and hawsepipe routes, a cluster of shorter, targeted certificate courses offers entrants a faster route into specific onboard roles.
The Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) Course is a foundational programme for aspiring deck ratings, covering seamanship, ropework, deck maintenance, watchkeeping duties, and basic navigation aid operation. It is often the fastest route from Ordinary Seaman to Able Seaman and a common prerequisite for ratings seeking to build sea time toward officer conversion later on.
The Marine Catering Course trains candidates for galley and steward roles—Ship’s Cook, Chief Cook, Steward—covering food hygiene, provisioning, menu planning for extended voyages, and the specific safety requirements of working in a shipboard galley. Catering ratings form an essential, often overlooked department on every crewed vessel and offer a stable entry point requiring no prior navigational or engineering background.
The Radio Telephone (RT) Course for Radio Officers certifies competency in the operation of shipboard radiotelephone equipment, distress and safety communication procedures under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, and radio watchkeeping protocols. While the standalone Radio Officer rank has largely been absorbed into bridge officer duties on most modern vessels, the RT certificate remains a mandatory or highly valued qualification on vessels still carrying dedicated radio watchkeeping duties, and it is a common specialisation for deck officers seeking an additional communications endorsement.
The Marlins English Course is a maritime-specific English proficiency course and test used widely by manning agents and shipowners to verify that seafarers, particularly from non-native English-speaking countries, can communicate safely and effectively onboard. It focuses on nautical vocabulary, standard marine communication phrases, and comprehension in operational and emergency contexts. Passing the Marlins Test—or an equivalent—is frequently a condition of employment before a candidate is even offered a berth.
APPRENTICESHIP: THE CADETSHIP PHASE
The cadetship is the industry’s apprenticeship model, common to all three tracks.
The duration is typically 12 to 18 months of seagoing service, broken into two or three contracts and interspersed with academy terms. Most cadets are sponsored by a shipping company, manning agent, or—in some countries—a government maritime training levy scheme. Sponsorship usually covers academy fees and a stipend in exchange for a post-qualification bond, commonly two to four years of service with the sponsoring company.
Onboard, cadets work under a Training Officer or designated mentor—the Chief Officer for deck cadets, the Chief or Second Engineer for engine cadets, and the senior ETO or Chief Engineer for ETO cadets—completing a structured Training Record Book that logs competencies against STCW Table A-II/1 for deck, A-III/1 for engine, or A-III/6 for ETO. On completion, cadets sit oral and written examinations administered by the flag state’s Maritime Administration to be issued their first Certificate of Competency as an Officer of the Watch.
This phase is where attrition is highest. Homesickness, seasickness, and the discipline of shift work weed out a meaningful proportion of entrants within the first contract. Those who complete it, however, step directly into a junior officer role with a clear promotion ladder ahead.
DECK DEPARTMENT CAREER PATH
The deck ladder begins with the Deck Cadet, who stands watches under supervision while completing chart correction duties, safety drills, and the Training Record Book. On earning the first Certificate of Competency, the cadet steps up to Third Officer, typically within a year of qualifying, taking on navigational watchkeeping, safety equipment maintenance, and cargo watch duties. With two to four years of total sea time, the officer advances to Second Officer, responsible for passage planning, navigation, and—on many vessels—medical officer duties. By five to eight years, promotion to Chief Officer brings responsibility for cargo operations, stability calculations, deck crew management, and the ship’s safety officer function. The top of the ladder is Master, reached after eight to twelve-plus years total, carrying overall command, legal responsibility, and commercial and crew management authority.
Progression between each rank requires minimum sea time as certified in the rank below, an approved higher-competency course such as the Chief Mate or Master (Unlimited) programme, and passing further oral and written Certificate of Competency examinations. Many deck officers also pick up specialised endorsements along the way—Dynamic Positioning for offshore vessels, Tanker Endorsements for oil, chemical, or gas trades, or Ice Navigation certificates for polar routes—each of which materially affects employability and salary.
ENGINE DEPARTMENT CAREER PATH
The engine ladder follows a parallel structure. The Engine Cadet stands supervised engine room watches, assists with maintenance, and builds out a Training Record Book. On qualifying, the cadet becomes Fourth Engineer, typically within a year, taking charge of watchkeeping and auxiliary machinery routine maintenance. With two to three years of total sea time, promotion to Third Engineer brings boiler and purifier operations along with watch supervision. By four to seven years, the Second Engineer holds main engine responsibility, leads the engine room team, and manages the planned maintenance system. The senior-most rank, Chief Engineer, is typically reached after eight to twelve-plus years and carries overall technical command of the machinery spaces, budget responsibility, and class and flag compliance.
The engine track mirrors the deck track in structure but is more overtly hands-on with mechanical, electrical, and increasingly software-driven systems. Chief Engineer candidates typically hold a Class 1 (Motor) Certificate of Competency and, on larger or more technically complex vessels such as LNG carriers or cruise ships, additional type-specific and high-voltage endorsements are near-mandatory.
THE ETO TRACK: A NEWER, FAST-RISING SPECIALISM
The Electro-Technical Officer role was formalised under the STCW Manila Amendments of 2010 in response to ships becoming steadily more automated, electrically complex, and digitally networked. Where older vessels had a generalist Electrician rating, modern tonnage—especially cruise ships, LNG and LPG carriers, offshore support vessels, and container ships with reefer plugs and high-voltage systems—demands a dedicated electro-technical officer.
The path begins with the ETO Cadet, who undergoes structured training against STCW Table A-III/6, covering electrical, electronic, and control engineering systems, high-voltage installations, automation, and instrumentation. From there, the ETO takes independent charge of electrical systems, automation troubleshooting, high-voltage switchgear, navigation and communication electronics maintenance, and cybersecurity of onboard operational technology systems. Many ETOs move toward a senior or “Chief ETO” designation on complex tonnage, or transition ashore into electrical superintendent roles overseeing fleet-wide electrical maintenance and dry-docking specifications.
Because ETOs sit at the intersection of electrical engineering and information technology, this track has become one of the more attractive entry points for candidates with a shore-based electrical or electronics diploma who convert into a maritime-specific STCW pathway, rather than coming up through a traditional deck or engine cadetship.
SHORE-BASED TRANSITIONS: LIFE AFTER OR ALONGSIDE THE SEA
A defining feature of a maritime career is that it is not necessarily a life sentence at sea. Most seafarers, particularly at the senior officer level, eventually move ashore—either as a deliberate mid-career pivot or as a natural landing point after 15 to 25 years of sea service.
Common shore destinations include maritime lawyers, port managers, port CEOs, marine surveyors and classification society surveyors with organisations like Class NK, DNV, ABS, or Lloyd’s Register, verifying vessel condition and class compliance; this typically requires several years as Chief Officer or Chief Engineer. Ship superintendents manage a portfolio of vessels for an owner or manager, overseeing maintenance, dry-docking, and crew performance. For deck officers, marine pilotage—harbour or sea pilotage—is a prestigious and well-compensated shore-adjacent role requiring extensive local navigational experience and further licensing. Port State Control officers and flag state inspectors take on government roles inspecting foreign-flagged vessels for compliance. Others become Designated Person Ashore under the ISM Code or move into wider Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment management. Maritime academy lecturers and simulator instructors train the next generation of cadets, while marine insurance and P&I Club claims handlers leverage operational experience in loss prevention and claims assessment.
A growing shore path specifically for ex-ETOs involves electrical and ETO superintendent roles, automation consultancy, or cybersecurity specialisation, given the rising importance of operational technology and IT security on ships. Crewing managers and manning agency professionals recruit and manage the next generation of seafarers.
Many of these shore roles favour candidates who reached at least Chief Officer, Second Engineer, or senior ETO level before coming ashore, since the depth of operational judgement required is hard to substitute with classroom knowledge alone.
CLOSING THOUGHT
A career at sea is unusual among modern professions in offering a genuinely linear, merit-based ladder: sea time plus certification plus demonstrated competence equals promotion, largely irrespective of pedigree. Whether one enters through a sponsored cadetship, the rating-to-officer route, or a lateral electro-technical conversion, the destination options—command of a vessel, chief engineering responsibility, or a specialised shore-based maritime career—are earned in a way few industries can still claim. For those willing to accept the trade-offs of time away from home, the sea remains one of the more meritocratic, globally portable careers still open to a determined newcomer.
